DRIVING COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE THROUGH
TECHNOLOGY ADOPTION
Burlington, MA, - (October 8, 2009) - Emptoris, a leading provider of enterprise supply and contract management software, today honored six global companies for driving competitive advantage through the use of technologies and Emptoris solutions. The Emptoris awards recognize achievements in the areas of innovation, rapid time to value and sustainability. Global companies recognized for their accomplishments at a special ceremony last week at the Emptoris Empower 2009 Conference in Boston were:
- For Demonstrating Sustainability: Syngenta Crop Protection AG and Novartis International AG
- For Demonstrating Innovation: Genentech Inc. and a leading global engineering and construction firm
- For Demonstrating Rapid Time to Value: Brightpoint, Inc. and Takeda Pharmaceuticals NA, Inc.
"We have clearly seen that supply and contract management technologies not only deliver process efficiencies and bottom-line savings, but also a competitive edge. The Emptoris awards honor those companies that have achieved a certain level of supply and contract management excellence, and document how those companies are achieving that competitive edge," said Patrick Quirk, Chief Executive Officer of Emptoris, Inc.
Sustainability Award: The Emptoris Sustainability Award is presented to the Emptoris customers that have best demonstrated long-term, sustainable savings and strategic value to their organization through the application of technology and specifically Emptoris solutions. The 2009 winners of the Emptoris Sustainability Award are Novartis International AG, the world's largest pharmaceutical company by revenue, and Syngenta, one of the world's largest agrochemical companies.
Novartis International AG was honored specifically for "Sustainable Transformation" and its demonstration of large scale transformation or change in the company's supply and contract management organization. Novartis demonstrated how its use of three Emptoris solutions have had impact and reach across its organization. With Emptoris Sourcing, the company has able to realize notable productivity and pricing improvements in its sourcing operations. With Emptoris Contract Management the company gained better control of its processes and helped to manage corporate risk. With Emptoris Services Procurement, the company essentially restructured the services and labor procurement process, and helped ensure that such contracts and vendor relationships enforced overall corporate policies.
Syngenta was recognized for achieving sustainability by driving adoption of Emptoris' spend analysis, sourcing and contract management solutions across its global operations in more than 90 countries. Syngenta noted company had a "growing need" for global spend and contract visibility, as well as standardized ways of working globally, which led the company to employ an integrated supply and contract management solution. Syngenta worked "methodically" to implement the Emptoris suite of solutions, and this included a change management that helped the company train staff and suppliers, as well as educate them on the benefits of globally standardized process. Syngenta credits "intensive training" and education for their adoption success, and noted that the company held a series of workshops which included guest speakers who had "been on a similar journey." Syngenta's adoption has grown steadily over the past couple years with over 50 countries online with the contract management solution and employees across 90 countries utilizing the Emptoris solution suite. Utilization is being driven as well, and the company reported a more than 200% increase in the utilization of the sourcing solution in H1 2009. Finally, Syngenta credits "instant access" to the contract management solution, and "significant savings" in "efficiency in personnel time" have helped drive adoption.
Innovation Award: The Emptoris Innovation Award is presented to the companies that best exemplify the use of "game changing" technology to drive innovation within their organization. Heightened consideration was given to the innovative use of Emptoris technologies to achieve specific goals of the broader organization. The 2008 winners of Emptoris Innovation Award are Genentech Inc., one of the world's leading biotech companies. One of the leading engineering and construction groups in the world was also honored in this category.
Genentech Inc. contracts with physicians and investigative sites, and clinical trial service providers to enable the company's development organization to conduct clinical trials which can lead to life-saving and/or life-improving therapies for patients. Speeding up the process for contract execution contributes towards the goal of developing and bringing new therapies to market in a timely and efficient, yet safe, manner. To conduct a single clinical trial, Genentech can generate up to a 500 contracts. The company implemented Emptoris Contract Management to help automate and speed the contracting process, and made several innovative uses of the contract management solution to achieve its goals. Genentech reports that its contract management innovations enable the company to "deliver improved efficiency within our contract management system" to deliver "increased access to contract information" and "documentation of process adherence," as well as "increased accuracy in contract metrics measurement."
One of the leading engineering and construction groups in the world, was honored for its implementation of the Emptoris Spend Analysis and Emptoris Sourcing solutions which are "used for the purchase of equipment and material that are used in industrial projects and part of the scope of what [the company] delivers to clients." The company noted that "by using the sourcing application we are now enforcing the use of the supplier register as the single place where all suppliers must enter their responses to a pre-qualification questionnaire." With all divisions utilizing one solution, the pre-qualification process and data are standardized across the organization, making the data and processes consistent over time saves the company and its suppliers time and money. The company has also developed a scoring sheet that allows the organization to score suppliers in the same way across the different divisions.
Rapid Time to Value Award: The Emptoris Rapid Time to Value Award is awarded to an Emptoris customer that has successfully implemented an Emptoris solution in the past 12 to 18 months and has demonstrated early success in driving rapid cost savings and value to the organization. The 2009 winners of the Rapid Time to Value Award are Brightpoint, Inc., a global leader in the distribution of wireless devices, and Takeda Pharmaceuticals North America, Inc., a leading research-based global pharmaceutical company.
Takeda Pharmaceuticals North America (TPNA) was recognized for the rapid launch of its contract management program – and realizing quick value with its use of the solution for contract drafting, negotiation and execution. Brightpoint, Inc. completed two significant acquisitions in 2006 and 2007 that transformed the footprint and size of the company globally. In anticipation of the need to better control and reduce total spend for the new global organization, and improve the ability to drive negotiations and sourcing events more effectively, the company decided to implement the Emptoris Spend Analysis, Emptoris Sourcing and Emptoris Contract Management solutions. In addition to typical cost control and reduction objectives, Brightpoint had an important need to collect data from a "myriad of ERP and home grown business operating systems" and to "provide enriched data to perform a meaningful spend analysis." In under a year, Brightpoint achieved annualized savings from direct sourcing events – and "literally transformed" its business "from spreadsheet based manual systems" that lacked workflow and scalability to one that offers a solid foundation "to identify, drive and validate savings across a global organization."
