NOTED MIT DEAN OF ENGINEERING THOMAS MAGNANTI ELECTED TO EMPTORIS'
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
One of the Leading Authorities on Optimization Technology to Bring
Theoretical and Practical Experience to B2B E-commerce Solutions
Provider.
Burlington,
Mass., October 23, 2000 - Emptoris, Inc., the leading provider
of dynamic B2B e-commerce solutions for net market makers and
Global 5000 companies, today announced that it has named veteran
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) professor and Dean
of Engineering Thomas L. Magnanti to the company's board of directors.
Dr. Magnanti, one of the world's leading authorities on optimization
technology, brings more than thirty years of engineering and management
experience to his board position and will help shape the ongoing
strategic direction of the company.
"We are quite pleased that Emptoris is the first corporate board
of directors on which Dr. Magnanti has agreed to serve," said
Avner Schneur, president and CEO. "Dr. Magnanti is a respected
member of the academic, technology and business communities, having
dedicated his career to researching the theory and application
of large-scale optimization, particularly in the areas of network
flows and combinatorial optimization. His considerable insight
and experience will be invaluable as Emptoris continues to make
strides in the competitive B-to-B e-commerce space."
Dr. Magnanti is the Dean of the School of Engineering and one
of twelve Institute Professors at MIT, where he has been a faculty
member since 1971. In his tenure, he co-founded and served as
co-director for the Leaders for Manufacturing Program and the
System Design and Management Program, headed the Management Sciences
Area of the Sloan School of Management and co-directed MIT's interdepartmental
Operations Research Center. Dr. Magnanti is a past president of
the Operations Research Society of America (ORSA) and is the former
president of the Institute of Operations Research and the Management
Sciences (INFORMS). He holds an undergraduate degree in Chemical
Engineering from Syracuse University, master's degrees in Statistics
and Mathematics from Stanford University, and a doctorate in Operations
Research, also from Stanford University.
"Emptoris' use of optimization technology in the B2B e-commerce
market is truly groundbreaking," explained Dr. Magnanti. "While
optimization technology has been proven as a valuable tool in
many industries for a number of years, Emptoris is the first company
to use it to automate the decision support process for complicated
online transactions. As a director, I look forward to lending
my knowledge and experience to contribute to the ongoing success
of Emptoris."
